Vegetarian Canadian Poutine

This rich French Canadian dish is a real taste treat. Traditionally, it is made with plain cheese curds. If you cannot find them in your market, use pepper jack cheese, broken into curds.Vegetarian Canadian Poutine

Serves 4.

Ingredients:

Main Dish:

  • 1 pound frozen French fries
  • 4 oz cheese curds or pepper jack cheese
  • 1 recipe for Vegetarian “Swiss Chalet Sauce” (below)

Sauce:

  • 3 c water
  • 1/4 c ketchup
  • 1 Tbsp chicken style broth mix (such as Chik’Nish)
  • 2 tsp molasses
  • 1 tsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp poultry seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp dried mustard
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground red pepper
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

Directions:

  1. Cook the French fries according to package directions. Prepare the cheese curds.
  2. To make the sauce, place a medium saucepan over medium low heat; add water and ketchup. Add broth mix, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, poultry seasoning, ginger, mustard, onion powder, and red pepper. Stir with a whisk until boiling. Reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. Stir in lemon juice. Mix cornstarch with 1 tbsp water; stir into sauce. Cook, stirring constantly until sauce thickens.
  3. Plate the fries and sprinkle the cheese on top. Spoon a generous amount of sauce on each serving.
